Hi there! Megan & Drikus from the Fiddy States here! As native Australians, we’ve spent the last six months taking a break from work so we could travel the United States. Our goal was to see all 50 states, and now we can finally say that we have made it. Today, we’re excited to share with you our top 10 favorite RV destinations. This was a hard one since there are so many good places to choose from, but in no particular order, here we go!
- Alaska
Alaska was by far our favorite state for many reasons. First, we LOVED having 24 hours of daylight during the summer. The sun would go down behind the mountains for about 3 hours and then slowly start coming up again. This allowed us to stay up late and enjoy all the amazingly beautiful scenery that Alaska has to offer. Exploring the entire state was amazing and we had a great time camping in various state parks, cooking on the grill and sitting next to the campfire watching the abundant Alaskan wildlife.
- Valley of the Gods, Utah
The Valley of the Gods was by far our favorite boondocking location, and we’d definitely recommend this to anyone who has an RV and a few days to spend in the area. Utah is filled with breathtaking scenery, and we really loved the vivid orange colors and the vastness of the different rock formations – we definitely gave our DSLR a workout with the amount of photos we took. Utah actually reminded us a little bit of the outback back home. There is so much to explore in the surrounding areas, and we highly recommend Arches National Park for anyone who likes to hike!
- Florida Keys
Aside from the great weather and waterfront drive, there was so much to do, eat and see on our drive through the Florida Keys, as we headed down to Key West to visit the southernmost point in the continental U.S. What we loved most about the Keys was the freedom to camp right next to the beach. The weather was so warm, and sitting on the beach, watching the sunset over the water, was an experience we will never forget.
- San Diego, California
San Diego was such a fun city – really relaxed and the beaches reminded us of our home back in Perth, Australia. The city itself is incredibly clean, and we loved driving through downtown and over the bay at sunset to look back at the city in all its glory. You can also camp right next to the beach at Silver Strand State Park. It was full when we were there, but it’s definitely somewhere we’d love to come back and RV in the future. We wish we could have spent just a little more time in San Diego, and it’s definitely on our list of places to visit again.
- Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Crater Lake was a cool little pit stop we ended up enjoying a lot more than we thought during our time in Oregon, and our pictures don’t do it any justice. We’re not joking when we say Crater Lake had the bluest water we’ve ever seen! There are a few spots around the park you can walk to with amazing views and hardly any people. We ended up making lunch in our RV and brought it up to the lookout point for a perfectly serene picnic.
- Glacier National Park, Montana
Glacier National Park was our favorite National Park followed closely by Glacier Bay National Park (only accessible via ship). We don’t have many mountains in Perth, and were really blown away by the incredible views driving through the park on Going-To-The-Sun Road. We felt so close to the mountains, and, when we got to the bottom, there was the most incredible river we saw on our trip. We didn’t get a chance to do many of the hikes this time around, but can’t wait to return to see what breathtaking sights are waiting for us.
- Acadia National Park, Maine
Acadia National Park was filled with so many different scenic views. We took a lot of stops to take in the contrasting landscapes from lakes to beaches to the ocean meeting the rocks. We also learned Cadillac Mountain is one of the best spots in the U.S. to watch a sunrise. We found an RV park just outside of Acadia National Park and would recommend this trip for everyone.
- Las Vegas, Nevada
There is a ton to see and do in Vegas, but it can get really expensive. Luckily, we found Oasis RV Resort just outside the strip, which let us save money and gave us the freedom to venture into Vegas at our own pace. The resort itself was incredible. We would sit in the pool during the heat of the day, and go explore the strip in the cool of the night… well, as cool as Vegas can be in July!
- New York City, New York
Exploring the Big Apple was one of the highlights of traveling to all 50 states with our RV. Initially, we were concerned we wouldn’t be able to visit Manhattan Island in an RV. Thankfully, we found Harriman State Park just an hour outside of Manhattan Island and only $15 a night! Our campsite was beautiful and it felt surreal coming from the concrete jungle to the beauty of the woods in just 60 minutes. We drove into the city in the mornings and then used our bicycles to explore around town. We managed to do everything we wanted to including cycling across the Brooklyn Bridge, taking in the iconic views including Central Park and the 9/11 Memorial and trying as much New York-style food as we could.
- Grand Canyon, Arizona
A picture really can’t capture the vastness and magnitude of the Grand Canyon. It was high on our bucket list, and we saved it until the very end of our trip. We left early in the morning from Las Vegas and enjoyed the drive and sights through the entire region. Once we got to the Grand Canyon, we walked around to take in and capture as much as we could. We are so glad that we were able to tick this one off our bucket list.
